Solar
Lanterns for Kenyan's
February

We
in this country have much to be grateful for, even though we seldom
think about it. We take so much for granted. We don't think much
about the fact that we have plenty of electricity to power an
increasingly electronic gadget lifestyle. We have lights, air
conditioning, heating, computers, PDA's, smart phones, the list goes
on and on. All this is at our fingertips.
I
saw a story today on CNN about a man in Nairobi, Kenya who is
building small inexpensive LED solar lights for people that have no
access to what we take for granted everyday, electric light. His
name is Evans Wadongo and he is a CNN Hero. This simple effort is
literally changing peoples lives there. The money people save in kerosene
and fire wood, traditionally used for lighting, can now go toward
buying food. The light helps children with their school at night
work keeping many in school. This may seem like nothing to us, but
for them it is a major lifestyle improvement. The cost of these life
changing lanterns is $20.00 per unit.

Evans Wadongo
has built and distributed an estimated 10,000 solar lanterns. Evans
has partnered with the non profit Sustainable Development for All-Kenya,
(http://sustainabledevelopmentforall.org/).
