Follow the Money

June 17, 2010

As I sit here watching the Senate hearing with BP CEO Tony Hayward, I naturally start thinking about how much money the oil companies give directly to our so-called duly elected representatives. As you know, it is my personal and professional opinion that our representatives do not act in our best interest first, they consider us second and consider first those that pay them more money then we do.

With the recent Supreme Court decision regarding corporations and our elections, the Campaign Finance Ruling, this will just get worse.

Side Note: Check out http://www.asupremelarceny.com, the website for my short film about the ruling. Buy a t-shirt!

In the 2009, 2010 111th congress, oil companies gave $1,350,808.00 directly to congressional campaigns. Here is a breakdown of those contributions.

Chevron Corporation $125,450.00
Koch Industries $123,550.00
Exxon Mobile $  98,000.00
Valero Energy $  72,300.00
Marathon Oil $  67,650.00
Oil & Gas $  66,458.00
Oil & Gas Producers $  52,750.00
Anadarko Petroleum $  52,400.00
Occidental Petroleum $  51,200.00
Williams Companies $  49,000.00
Bass Brothers  $  45,200.00
Quintana Minerals $  44,800.00
Conoco Phillips $  43,500.00
Tesoro Petroleum $  39,000.00
Jma Energy $  38,600.00
XTO Energy $  36,900.00
Southwestern Energy $  36,800.00
Chesapeake Energy $  32,450.00
Apache Energy $  31,200.00
Murphy Oil  $  27,900.00
IPAA $  27,000.00
Berexco  $  24,700.00
SIGM $  24,000.00

Here are the top recipients of that money.

Lincoln, Blanche Lambert Dem AR $216,700.00
Vitter, David Rep AL $170,200.00
Murkowski, Lisa Rep AK $146,550.00
Bennett, Robert F. Rep UT $117,650.00
Cornyn, John Rep TX $  87,575.00
Coburn, Thomas A. Rep OK $  76,500.00
Specter, Arlen Dem PA $  74,000.00
Dorgan, Byron L. Dem ND $  70,950.00
Bayh, Evan Dem IN $  62,150.00
Demint, James W. Rep SC $  58,850.00
Burr, Richard Rep NC $  55,050.00
Grassley, Charles E. Rep IA $  53,400.00
Landrieu, Mary L. Dem LA $  51,850.00
Nelson, E. Benjamin Dem NE $  48,900.00

It is critically important that we do everything possible to separate our government from the corporations. Nothing for the benefit of the people will happen otherwise.  Corporate America and the mega corporations own our government plain and simple and it must stop.

In total, our representatives have accepted $143,831,148. Democrats have accepted $38,188,446, Republicans $105,362,292, and others $280,410. That is just from the oil industry.
